Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park

The largest terrestrial-maritime reserve in the European Western Mediterranean Sea, with a surface of 460 km², comprising the mountain range of Sierra de Cabo de Gata and 120 km² of the sea. In 1997 it was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and later, in 2001 it was included among the Specially Protected Areas of Mediterranean Importance.

More than 1,000 plants and species of fauna have been recorded in the reserve, including flamingos, storks, cranes and ducks. The European Union has designated a Special Protection Area for bird-life.

The park is very close to the city of Almeria and is visited by thousands of people each year.
