Highlights / General details

Guided hikes to The Wave section of North Coyote Buttes take about 1-1.5 hours and total distance is around 3 miles. This is not a difficult hike although there is some walking up hill and through sandy areas. Permits are required by the BLM for hikes in both north and south coyote buttes area. The Wave is made of Jurassic age Navajo sandstone that is approximately 190 million years old. Scientists who study The Wave say that the old sand dunes turned into hard compacted rock over the ages, calcifying in vertical and horizontal layers. Erosion by wind and rain has created the spectacular landscape which appears now. A good time for photographing The Wave is the few hours around midday when there are no shadows in the center, although early morning and late afternoon shadows can also make for dramatic photos. After a recent rain storm, numerous pools form which can be great shooting.

Another area of great interest to us is South Coyote buttes. We feel that the southern section of Coyote Buttes is even better than it's more famous cousin to the north. Not only is this area a much shorter hike it's also considerably more varied from a photographer’s viewpoint. This is also a permit area but due to the difficulty of route finding and tough roads, there are less people visiting this area. Special vehicles and experience is required to visit this area and our guides have the experience you will need. Photographers have consistently rated this section higher than the northern area. The South Teepees standalone from Coyote Buttes and are seldom visited by anyone. It takes about 30 minutes to hike the one mile to them in loose sand from the Cottonwood Cove parking area. If you leave an hour before dawn and hike by headlamp you can be there by sunrise. The South Teepees are composed of the same very strongly colored Navajo sandstone that comprises the “Wave". About 1000 feet to the North of these are the "North Teepees", which are similar in character. Both of these sites have seen very few visits from serious photographers or anyone else for that matter. So your chance of creating an original work here is quite good.
