When to goOctober – March

We love that nearly 50% of Tasmania consists of reserves, national parks and world heritage sites. It’s a rough diamond of pure, rugged landscapes, white water rapids, pink granite boulders and sweeping curves of white sand beach. If you’re in search of the Tasmanian Devil, you’ll find it here*.

This intrepid rafting trip ends in utter luxury in Freycinet National Park and Cradle Mountain: perfect for those looking for some comfort after a few nights of back-to-nature camping.

Starting with an intrepid five-day white water rafting experience, you’ll see most of the island from the valleys and gorges of the Franklin River. All the way you’ll be escorted by safety vehicles, and our fully insured and highly experienced guides.

Ranging from steep and wild to slow and calm waters, you’ll meander past echoing cliffs, race through green and rocky rapids, and slide down the famous, cascading Pig Trough waterfall. Perfect for some action photography, the 14,000 year-old limestone cliffs provide the ideal picturesque background. You’ll stop for lunch in stunning spots such as quartzite gorges and a beach of polished river stones: simply amazing.

By night, camp under tree canopies and on sandy beaches in basic outdoor tents, and hear stories of the area from expert guides around the camp fire: back-to-nature Tasmania style.

Now it’s only fair to reward yourself with pure wilderness comfort. We love the fascinating combination of granite mountains, white sand beaches and azure waters of Freycinet National Park: the perfect place to head for some post-camping beachside pampering. We’ll book you into the bio-sustainable Piermont Retreat for some serious eco-luxury to unwind those achy rafting muscles. The spa suites even have a neutral magnetic field to guarantee restful sleep (really), and open out onto the natural sand dunes of stunning Oyster Bay. Chill out, take a stroll and snuggle up in front of your log fire in this home away from home.

And from the beach to the highlands: no Black Tomato trip to Tasmania would be complete without rope climbing and trekking on spectacular Cradle Mountain. Our expert mountain guide will take you around the mirror-flat Dove Lake, through the mountain trails on horse back, or even up to the mountain peak itself – an eight hour trek well worth the effort (and officially one of the ‘100 things to do before you die’ in Australia). We’ll put you up in a luxury log cabin at Cradle Mountain Lodge, with your own private hot tub overlooking glacial rivers. Indulge in the Alpine spa (perfect for a massage after a hard day’s trekking, or a pedicure to prepare you for home) and, finally, you’ll fly to Hobart for your last evening in Tas before your journey home.

*Unlike the cartoon it’s actually a small dog which looks a bit like a mouse (think long whiskers, pink ears, sharp teeth), and screeches when it’s angry. Not sure we’d like to bump into one of those late at night.
