Hotel description

The Observatory Hotel sits tucked away on a quiet side street near the historic Rocks district, an easy walk from any number of downtown destinations yet well isolated from the constantly developing Wharf and waterfront. Here, behind a stately Georgian facade, is one of Sydney’s most elegant and intimate hotels.

The Observatory’s spacious bedooms are decorated in an opulent Regency style, with polished mahogany furnishings and rich fabrics. The television, CD player, safe and minibar are all discreetly hidden away inside armoires and cabinets. Bathrooms are marble, of course, with separate shower and oversize bathtub and heated towel racks. Slippers are hidden away in the polished cedar wardrobe, as is an umbrella, as insurance against Sydney’s maritime climate.

The Galileo restaurant serves traditional French cuisine with an unexpected international influence, in an atmosphere designed after London’s Venetian restaurant, Harry’s Bar, amid fine Fortuny fabrics and original artworks. Lighter contemporary Australian fare is on offer in the Globe Bar, a cedar-paneled club room furnished with velvet sofas and winged leather armchairs.

The hotel’s day spa offers a number of treatments, making use of Payot and La Prairie products, and features among its sporting options a 20-meter heated pool and a gymnasium.

As for location, the Observatory is just ten minutes’ walk from Circular Quay and the Harbour, within easy reach of the Opera House and the vibrant Wharf development, and a near-infinite variety of shops, restaurants, galleries and museums.
