General

That is what it was for Hans Christian Andersen, the writer of fairytales, and that is what it has been for millions of tourists since then.

The painters and writers were the first to see the light. Literally. And the poetry of the humble fishing community at the top of Europe. The Skagen Group made the place famous. They transformed it with a brushstroke into a Mecca for artists and bohemians. And then a desirable holiday destination for well-to-do Copenhageners. "We went to Skagen" was heard more and more in the best circles and it still is.

The painters were followed by the writers. And the politicians. And all the other well-known figures who wanted to show that they had taste and could afford to.

And then came the musicians. From every corner of Denmark. And from kindred coasts in Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Because it was good to be here and there was a song festival every summer.

Today Skagen is an international magnet for tourists and welcomes visitors from all over the world. People who come to watch the two seas meeting. To experience the world-class art and enjoy the very special atmosphere. To feel on top of the world.
