Vaillancourt Fountain, Justin Herman Plaza, San Francisco

Designed by the Canadian sculptor and painter Armand Vaillancourt, who initially called it "Québec libre" ("Free Quebec"), today the fountain is known as Vaillancourt Fountain. The immense cubic fountain is 200 feet long, 140 feet wide and 36 feet high. Because of its controversy, the sculptor had to fight several efforts to demolish it.
