Mount Pinatubo is a 1,780 meters (5,840 feet) high volcano in the Philippines. After an inactivity of 600 years, it began to erupt again on APrinl 2nd 1991 and then on June 15 1991 erupted catastrophically. The eruption didn't stop for nine hours, killing over 800 people and leaving 100.000 people homeless. It was the second largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century. Millions of tones of sulfur dioxide were spread in the atmosphere, influencing the temperature worldwide in the following years.

After the eruption ended, in the volcanic crater a lake formed, Lake Pinatubo. This crater lake was small, hot (the water was 40 °C) and very acid. The rain cooled and diluted the lake, lowering the temperature to 26 °C by 2003.
