The Pergamon Museum is situated on the Museum Island in Berlin. The building was designed by Alfred Messel and Ludwig Hoffmann and it was built between 1910 and 1930.

The museum has three divisions: The Classical Antiquities, the Middle East Museum and the Museum of Islamic Art. It is one of the most visited art museums in Germany, with approximately 850,000 people every year. It is known as one of the best places to see religious art, in Germany.

The center piece of the museum is the Zeus Altar, in the Classical Antiquities department (180-160 BC). It is so large, that is needs its own room. After discovering thousands of fragments in modern-day Bergama, Turkey, it took twenty years to reassemble the altar.

The Middle East Museum contains a large collections of antiquities from ancient Babylonia, Persia, and Assyria, maybe the largest in the world.

In 2008, the restoration of the museum began, but still the museum was not totally closed.
