The city of Agra, the quintessence of the grand Mughal era, reigns to this day in the public mind as the embodiment of Royal Grace, imposing architecture and power. But it is for that superb white marble tomb known as the Taj Mahal built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, that Agra occupies a mystic stature in the world’s imagination. After his first sight in 1857 of the Taj inlaid with semi-precious stones, Lord Robert wrote, quote “Neither words nor pencil could give to the most imaginative reader the slightest idea of the all satisfying beauty and purity of this glorious conception. To those who have not already seen it, I would say - go to India. The Taj alone is worth the Journey ....” unquote.
Also visit Sikandra - the mausoleum of Emperor the Great and Agra Fort - whose silent walls are witness to the rise and fall of the Mughal empire. Shopping in Agra is a delight - Agra is famous for its handicrafts, most prominent among which are marble and soft stone inlay articles, zari and embroidery work, leather footwear, garments and durries. Other important local products are brassware, carpets, jewellery and sarees. (Taj Mahal is closed on Friday)
