The original hotel was founded in 1812 and it was known under the name of Mivart's Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Claridge, who were the owners of a smaller hotel next to Mivart, bought it in 1854 and transformed it into Claridge’s. The present building is not the original one, as in 1894 it was bought by Richard D’Oyly Carte, founder of Savoy Hotel, and was demolished and replaced with a new building, with modern facilities such as lifts and en suite bathrooms. The building has been placed on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.
In 2005, The Savoy Group was bought by Quinlan Private who renamed it the Maybourne Hotel Group.
