In the old times, it was an important place of pilgrimage for both Catholic and the Orthodox. The impressive Monastery of St. John the Theologian is the island's landmark and the most visited attraction. It was built in 1088,when the Byzantine emperor granted the whole island to St. Christodoulos, for organizing a settlement for monastic purposes.

The Greek island has many beauties to offer to visitors. Crystalline waters, great for swimming and diving, secluded coves attracting lovers, rocky hills, peaceful valleys
