Look forward to

The famous marketplace in Marrakesh's Medina quarter is definitely a most see if you're visiting the formal imperial city in Morocco. The name of the market place means Assembly of the Dead in Arabic, but it could also mean place of the vanished mosque referring to a destroyed Almoravid mosque, with the word djemaa meaning mosque.

The market has a completely new face during day time and at nigh, but there's something going on at any time. The after noon is the best time to go shopping because most of the vendors will be having their siesta and won't bother getting up for every person passing their market stall.

A large number of spectacles are going on, from story tellers to snake charmers and any other kind of performers you can imagine. When the food stalls start moving in, they slip away, letting the culinary show to begin. The food is freshly prepared on the spot, offering a large variety of fish, meat or vegetable. Any customer can order whatever he would like, indicating food and the quantity. In just a few minutes, the fresh meal is ready to be served.

The market has plenty of cafés around the Jemaa from where any tired tourist can just admire the fuss of the activities going on all around.
