Hotel description

Budapest doesn’t get any more upscale than the brand-new New York Palace. Despite its all-American name, it’s essentially an Italian production — the original Italian Renaissance building, dating back to 1894, has been given a contemporary makeover by the Boscolo hotel group and the Italian architect Maurizio Papiri.

In days gone by the New York Palace’s literary café hosted a thriving community of writers and journalists; today its restaurant (designed by the man of the moment, Adam Tihany) plays host to the other half, the beautiful people, and the basement cigar bar serves a selection of cognacs nearly as old as the original Palace itself.

If the public spaces are all ostentatious crimson and white, under acres of Italian silk and tons of Italian marble, the guest rooms are just as rich, in soft blues, browns and golds. Underneath all the pomp they’re the very picture of the ultramodern luxury hotel room, with all the high technology you’d expect from a 2006-vintage five-star.

No modern luxury hotel is complete without a spa; this one, inspired by an Alpine ice cave, features a sauna and turkish bath as well as an indoor pool and a menu of intensive health and beauty treatments. The Alps, the Italian Renaissance, and a bit of old New York for good measure — it’s easy to be surprised by the the busy streets of Budapest just outside.
