Many spa resorts offer a strangely infantile experience, pampering guests into a near comatose state, as though the purpose of a spa retreat were to return patrons to the womb. Who knows—for some that may be the appeal. But the spa experience offered by Canyon Ranch is one of an entirely different sort.

While certainly not a boot camp (this is a five-star resort, with service as devoted as that offered by the more sedentary retreats) Canyon Ranch relies upon the guest to put forth considerable effort in pursuit of rejuvenation and healing. And it’s just as well; you can’t expect to be able to call your program Life Enhancement if it’s little more than a mud bath and some fresh-squeezed juice.

The expansive Spa Complex offers just about every physical activity known to man, from Pilates and underwater massage to yoga and tai chi to good old-fashioned weight training, as well as tennis, golf, and racquetball. The Health and Healing Center offers consultations with nutritionists, medical doctors, and even psychiatrists—many guests check in for a life-altering experience, something far beyond mere rest and relaxation.

Though Canyon Ranch is nominally located in the city of Tucson, don’t expect to get out on the town much; the resort is rather secluded, occupying 70 acres of ranch land in the foothills of the Santa Catalina mountains, and the Canyon Ranch experience itself is an immersive one. Business facilities ensure you don’t have to cut off all contact with the outside world, so it’s not quite like being institutionalized—but mobile phone use is discouraged, so it’s not quite like a normal resort either (thankfully). It’s perfect for when you need to recharge in a substantial way; just don’t come expecting to be pampered.
