Hotel description

The unique architectural style of Banyan Tree Bintan villas may pose a potential risk for children below the age of 12 years. Guests with children are requested to read and sign a Disclaimer Form upon check-in.

Indonesia is a vast archipelago of islands, and some of its famous resort islands, like Bali and Java, are more far-flung than others. The island of Bintan, though, is less remote, a part of the Riau archipelago, just 45 minutes by catamaran from Singapore, and thanks to this easy access, has long been a favorite escape for dwellers of that island city-state.

Bintan is also home to an outpost of the Banyan Tree chain, whose seaside resorts span the Indian Ocean and beyond, from Seychelles and the Maldives to Phuket. All are high-end holiday destinations in stunning locations, with top-notch service, excellent Thai cuisine, and spas consistently ranked among the best in the world.

The Banyan Tree Bintan, thankfully, does nothing to break this mold, although it’s hardly a carbon copy. The location is unique, setting villas amidst virgin rainforest, and the sea is so sparkling clean it’s hard to believe the bustling seaport of Singapore could be so close. The hotel’s Balinese-style villas are as luxuriously appointed as one could expect, all featuring private jacuzzis or small pools, and many with views of the South China Sea.

Some spas focus on fitness and self-improvement, but the Banyan Tree spa is not one of these. This is what is referred to as pampering, an experience so passive that it’s a wonder general anesthetic isn’t administered (though you could probably whip something up from the minibar). Forget about weight training and cardio, or even yoga—here relaxing isn’t something you do, it’s something that’s done <em>to</em> you.

Should you wish to flex those newly treated muscles, there are options, from golf (if that counts) to scuba diving, windsurfing, and sailing. We imagine most guests, however, will limit their exercise to walking to and from the restaurants, or just ordering in, as this place is built for leisure.
