Surfing the ring of fire… volcano surfing the warm ashes of the mighty Cerro Negro is quite literally an out of this world experience. A crocodile safari in the mysterious waters of the San Juan River? You can also kayak, mountain bike and raft around this lush tropical nature reserve. Zip lining through the jungle canopy and brave a canopy walk: there is a 100m long hanging bridge over the forested canyon. There are 800 hectares of forest home to rare butterflies, monkeys, and iguanas. Biking through the jungle at Morgan’s Rock and sunset kayaking… if you time your trip well you might even catch baby sea turtles hatching on the beach. |
Flying into the capital Managua, you'll spend your first two nights in the southern San Juan region where you can kayak, mountain bike and raft around the San Juan River and in the Guatuzos nature reserve (how does a thrilling crocodile safari sound?) Bed down at Sabalos Lodge in your own private luxury cabin on the river, before heading by 4WD it to the rugged jungles of Granada and Cerro Negro.
Spend the next two days zip lining through the jungle canopy, trekking and horse riding around the Mesaya Volcano range and having a crack at perhaps the most extreme activity in the world - volcano surfing. In Cerro Negro you can ride the 'ring of fire' as you surf down the side of the volcano, passing over still warm ashes. A simply phenomenal experience.
Spend the next week at Morgan's Rock – a beach eco lodge tucked away in lush rainforest just three hours from the capital Managua. Wake up in a king size bed beside a huge tree trunk which grows through your cabin. How does eating fish you have caught that day and drinking juice from the surrounding fruit trees sound? Shrouded by tropical vegetation, ultra-clean Pacific Ocean waters and pristine beaches, this luxury lodge will make you feel awfully close to nature.
And no, it's not a hippy camp. More like hip paradise.
