Catching sight of seven (yes, that’s seven) volcanoes in one vista. If you’re lucky Fuego may even put on a show and start smoking in the distance. A favourite travel moment this will be. Visiting Guatemala’s Yaxha National Park for a jungle trek and drinks on top of the main temple at sunset. Heading out to the Farm or "Finca El Cisne" to enjoy a tranquil horseback ride through the farmlands and beautiful scenery of Honduras’ Copan Valley. White water rafting on one of the most beautiful and scenic rivers in all of Central America. |
Honduras are one of our favourite double acts and go together as well as a gin and tonic, or a barbecue and beer.
Combine a visit to both destinations and you'll get everything you could possibly want from a tropical getaway: Mayan ruins, volcanoes, chill-out time, gorgeous beaches and adrenalin adventures.
Start your journey in Guatemala's Antigua, a beautiful and laid back colonial town which sits high on the Guatemalan plains. The city is known for its beautiful Spanish-style architecture and cobblestone streets built in the 16th century. Using this as your base, you will head off for your first adventure: ascending an active volcano.
Next stop is the unspoilt and remote highland area known as Alaska. You can stop off en route at the ancient Mayan city of Ixmiche, or head straight there to hike and bike around the Zunil mountains, with views across 10 volcanoes and Lake Atitlan.
Spend the next few days at the beautiful hotel Casa Palopo, venturing off to kayak on Lake Atitlan and explore the rainforest in Peten, home to thousands of archaeological sites and a myriad of exotic wildlife.
One of the most spectacular sites in the area is Tikal, the largest and most impressive of the ancient ruined cities of the Maya civilization. There are thousands of ancient structures at Tikal and only a fraction of these have been excavated after decades of archaeological work.
Then it's on to Honduras, where your first stop will be Copan Ruinas, a beautiful and tranquil little village famous for its Mayan ruins. Here you can stay at Hacienda San Lucas, a restored farmhouse nestled in 300 acres of tropical forest. Spend 3 days visiting the Copan Maya ruins and horse riding through the farmland and Copan valley. Relax in hot springs, stroll the cobbled streets and enjoy the buzz of local activity. To cap your trip, we suggest a quick visit to the beautiful La Ceiba where you will ride on horseback along the beach and take a white water rafting adventure before heading back to San Pedro Sula airport to catch your flight home.
