General

One of the most protected areas of Romania, a truly amazing place to be, a place that you must see at least once in your life. 30% of the tourists which come here every year are foreigners.

The park has a total surface of 380 km² and it was founded in 1935 where once used to be the hunting domain of the Royal Court. The park is the place which suffered the least from human intervention, and it is home to 185 bird species, 1.190 plant species- of which 90 are unique in the country. Here live in harmony bears, wolves, black goats, dears, marmots, wild pigs, rabbits and many others.

These one of a kind plants and the many animal living here, are not the only reason this park is so special. In Retezat Mountains, there are 20 peaks with a height over 2.000 meters and between their valleys lie 80 lakes and glacier lakes. The deepest glacier lake in Romania can be found here, with a depth of 29 meters. The park has the status of protected natural area by a national and international interest and in 1979 it was recognized as a Reservation of the Biosphere.

Hiking in these mountains can be and is very rewarding. The magnificent views, the beauty of the landscape and the wilderness of the area will leave you breathless and you will forget all about tiredness.

Retezat National Park was chosen by New 7 Wonders Foundation as a great challenge for becoming one of the seventh natural wonders of the world. The approach belongs to New 7 Wonders Foundation, the same institution that succeeded two years ago to determine the 7 wonders of the contemporary world.
