General

At the border of Mures and Harghita county, only 5 km from the balneary resort Sovata, lies Praid, a small town in which live approximately 7000 people, respective Praid city with 4000 people.
Even though the name of Praid comes from the Hungarian "paraj" which means small field with grass, Praid is known for having the biggest salt mine not just from Romania, but from Europe. It's beginnings date from the Romans period.
In the vast galleries from which the salt was extracted, formed a salt mine micro climate, with relative constant temperatures, between C°14-16 and low humidity, 66-70%. The ionized air from the heart of the salt mine is favourable for those suffering of breathing diseases. In the summer time, 2500-3000 people come from all over the country to spend at least four hours inside. The mine is equipped with play grounds for children, a snack bar, library, pool tables, and even a chapel, which will make the hours spent underground entertaining.
The underground treatment began around the year 1960, in the Gh. Doja salt mine, where the first underground sanatoriums were arranged. Twenty years later, the treatment area was moved 120 meters deep, being 20 meters broad, 14 meters height and a couple of hundreds meters long. Transportation in the salt mine is made with buses, on the distance of 1250 meters.
