In 1886, Jet d'Eau was used as a safety valve for a hydraulic power network and only in 1891, its aesthetic value was recognized. Its maximum height was about 90 metres (295 feet). The present Jet d'Eau was installed in 1951 and it pumps lake water instead of city water, to an altitude of 140 metres (459 feet). There are about 7,000 litres of water in the air when the fountain is in operation.
It's worth taking a walk on the jetty to see it up close, even though you're risking to get soaking wet.
