This is just one of the seventy marine lakes on the Rock Islands in Palau, but its famous for the millions of golden jellyfish which can be seen here. Divers say that this is really an unusual place, but only snorkeling is allowed, as scuba diving can damage the jellyfish. The air bubbles exhaled by the scuba divers are traps for the jellyfish, lifting them to the surface.

The lake is about 12,000 years old and 30 meters deep. It is permanently stratified in two layers, an oxygenated upper layer and an anoxic lower layer. The permanent stratification is not usual for marine lakes, but here it happens because the lake is surrounded by rock walls and is situated in a tropical area, where there is almost none temperature variation.
