Engineers had to build a new island and miles of tunnels and bridge to connect it to the mainland. This was to be the largest passenger terminal in the world. After six years of work and US$20 billion, it opened on the 6th of July 1998. Even though it started on the wrong foot, experiencing some technical difficulties in the first months, after six months the airport started to operate normally. It managed to win 7 best airport awards in only 10 years.

Terminal 1 of the Hong Kong International Airport is the third largest airport passenger terminal building in the world (570,000 m²). With 750 take-offs and landings every day, the airport is the fourth busiest in the world, transporting 47 million passengers in 2008.

Facilities here are unlimited and 90,000 employees make sure that your stay at the airport is a pleasant one. If you go hungry, you should know that this airport is on the first place in class for dinning, so you might not want to leave in a hurry. The amazing view over Hong Kong will keep you company while enjoying your meal. Explore all its facilities and watch a movie, catch a round of golf and shop at the boutiques.

Due to its excellent facilities, the Hong Kong International Airport has been voted the world's best in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 and it's maintaining itself in the top five.
